Dear CCS Alumni and Friends, I am thankful that I am sending out a regular newsletter this time. Seems like the past few notifications have been of the sad kind. I am also thankful for those who always email me to say they are glad that these notices are sent out.
Do you know Mike Brown from the Class of 1972? I didn’t. I knew he was on the mailing list but he was just a KID when I was in school. I open up an email on August 3 and my head started to hurt. Dear me, this guy knows a lot of words and I think he is using most of them in this email. PLUS…he had attached 2 Word Doc!!!! I read the email and then I read it again. Hey, this guy is interesting!!! He stated that he had been “a modestly successful freelance writer/photographer for over 40 years”. When I read the attachments, he had me hooked!
He was starting a blog and was going to put stories of Cambridge on it. Would I be interested in putting “teasers” and links to his stories??? Oh my…YES!!!!!! After several emails, exchange of ideas, etc. Mike and I are ready to launch this.
Before we get into Mike’s stories, please read Mike’s “Tips and Motivation for “Growing Up In Cambridge” . http://www.oldhippierants.com/2018/08/11/tips-and-motivation-for-growing-up-in-cambridge/
We are hoping that this could be a catalyst to getting other alumni to share stories. This link is a much longer explanation of motives along with tips on the process of recording personalized Cambridge history. I think you will find it very interesting.
I can’t wait to share the stories that Mike has started on. I have read the drafts and found them very entertaining!!!
Thanks Mike, I am so glad you contacted me!!!

| Here is the final tally of the 14th Annual All Classes Reunion. My numbers don’t indicate whether the WALK-IN’s attended Saturday or Sunday or both. I know all of the WALK-IN’s for 1968 were at the Legion on Saturday | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Pauline, I have never been able to get to the all school reunion. I keep very busy in the summer. BUT IN 2014 the class of 1974 gathered for our 40th. I left Cambridge in 6th grade but am in contact with a few people. What I felt at the reunion was a true sense of community …. everyone was truly ‘over’ the cliques and labels from High School and it was so fun! I know some have a chance to get together still. Occasionally I see my classmates somewhere and we greet each other as friends. Thank you to the class of 1974!
Claudette Mayer, Class of l965
I had paid the fees and put it on my calendar to attend. I’ve enjoyed past reunions. I was happy to see that the chicken barbeque was happening this year. However, I’ve been having medical issues and was not able to attend the barbeque. I live in Johnstown, NY and don’t get to spend time with my former classmates/friends. The “all classes reunions” are the only time I get to talk to many of you. PS I don’t do sports anymore for medical reasons. /

Reply to John Davis about the Rice Seed Footbridge
The bridge had to be moved in order to repair the stone wall lining the Owl Kill. In June 2018, Chris Badaloni met with NYS and Washington County environmental agencies to review the condition of the brook and the wall. The Owl Kill is protected by the DEC. If you head north one block on the Owl Kill toward Spring Street, you are in the area where Bill O’Donnell (CCS ’60) and UAlbany did an archeological dig 25 years ago. Artifacts were found that date back 3800 years ago, making Cambridge Owl Kill site the second oldest archeological dig in NYS. Chris has a landscaping company on the Cambridge Flats south of the village on Rt22. He will likely be the one who does the repairs on the wall, but it will take time to get the approvals and money to make the repairs. Chris and Lee Foster moved the bridge on 20-Dec-2017 behind the DPW shed behind the Old Bus Garage (attached photo). There are plans to repair and restore the bridge, but again it takes time and money. As I understand it, the new owner of VARAK Park has said that once the wall is repaired and the bridge is replaced, that the “front lawn” of VARAK Park will be gifted to the Village. It will take time but our footbridge will return … then everyone young-n-old will have to re-carve their initials into it while smoking a cigarette just like we all did as kids.

Some of you may have been following the series that Pauline has generously
agreed to publish for me, for my brothers and our cousins on the CCS Indians website, on our family’s presence in Cambridge for going on 100 years, since our grandfather retired and moved the family here in 1920.
The story actually begins with his early years beginning in the 1870s. To be clear, it’s hoped that this is as much about the community of Cambridge, your hometown—for which I’m striving to do it justice —as it is about the family. August’s entry takes us back to the 1930s, and some reading these words may have fleeting toddler images of family and early friends, first glimpses of our four dramatic, colorful seasons, and even distant echoes of the Great Depression. Know that the material comes not only from family
archives, but from sources you all recognize (and their sources): Dave Thornton, and Ken Gottry, both senior and junior, my mentors and preeminent, trusted village historians all

At the 2017 Orange & Black Scramble Jim Basset (‘61) donated a round of golf for four at Lake Bomoseen Golf Course where he is manager. We finally we able to take advantage of our win. Beautiful view of lake from the fun course. Really enjoyed restaurant after golf Thanks Jim!
